MLCE17AE3 TVS - Diodes Application Field and Working Principle

Transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diodes are devices utilized to protect sensitive circuits from high-energy transients, such as electrostatic discharges (ESD) from human body, as well as power surges from a downstream high-energy discharge event. The MLCE17AE3 TVS diode is one of many such devices, offering unmatched protection for sensitive electronic circuits.

In essence, the MLCE17AE3 is a two-terminal device that acts as a clamping device. It enables potentials beyond a certain threshold (usually in terms of maximum continuous clamping voltage) to be clamped by a closed-path connection to a reference voltage, known as the ‘clamping voltage’. Whenever a transient or surge in voltage is sensed, both the reverse leakage current of the diode as well as the short-circuit current of the diode are reversed, thereby supplying a discharge path that closes the differential between the peak voltage of the transient and the TMOV (throttle maximum operation voltage) of the device.

Many MLCE17AE3TVS diodes offer superior performance characteristics. These include superior near-zero reverse leakage speeds, a full double-sided bi-directional protection, and a wide operating temperature range from -55°C to +125°C. Furthermore, their low capacitance of typically <0.3pF, combined with their fast response times when handling surge energy, ensures the device is an ideal choice for the protection of sensitive electronic components. With a maximum clamping voltage of 17V, these diodes are suitable for the protection of sensitive circuits like computers, automotive electronics, medical devices, and more.

The working principle behind the MLCE17AE3TVS diode relates to the dynamic reverse connection of the two terminals, as explained above. When a ‘forward voltage’ is applied to the anode side of the device, the diode conducts a small amount of current from the cathode side. This current is transferred across the P-type substrate material (located above the breakdown voltage) and out to the anode side. When the voltage applied to the device exceeds a certain threshold (usually the TMOV), the diode will begin to reverse the current flow and transfer it back to the P-type substrate. This serves to limit the differential between the maximum operating voltage of the device and the transient peak voltage.

The MLCE17AE3TVS diode is suitable for a wide range of applications, including the protection of a variety of consumer electronics, vehicular electronics, aerospace materials, and other sensitive circuits.
