The MP4458DQT-LF-P is an efficient, cost-effective 4.5-V to 58-V, synchronous step-down DC-DC converter with integrated switches. It operates from a single input supply to produce a fixed output voltage with over current, short circuit, and under voltage protection. The MP4458DQT-LF-P integrates four low on-resistance N-channel MOSFETs and a buck topology, providing high efficiency and excellent thermal performance.

This DC-DC switching regulator is capable of delivering up to 1.5A of output current and is available in a thermally efficient 2 x 3mmPowerQFN package. The MP4458DQT-LF-P features a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 58V, a fixed output voltage range of 1.25V to 5.5V and a 9.6-MHz fixed frequency. Working Principle: The MP4458DQT-LF-P uses a buck (step-down) dc-dc converter topology. It operates from a single external input supply to generate a fixed regulated output voltage. During normal operation, the MP4458DQT-LF-P switches transistors connected to the input voltage source to charge an internal inductor. As the inductor current levels off, the output voltage is regulated to a level determined by an internal feedback network. The stored energy in the inductor is released to the output and replenished by the input signal thus maintaining a constant output voltage level.

When the inductor current reaches a preset limit due to excessive output current demand, the MP4458DQT-LF-P enters an over-current protection mode. In this mode, the outputs are shut down by forcing the switches to open and the drain-source voltage on an internal reference transistor is amplified and compared against an internal threshold voltage. As long as the output current remains above a certain level, the reference transistor\'s source-drain voltage remains low, resulting in a high logic output from the over-current protection comparator, keeping the switches opened.

The MP4458DQT-LF-P also incorporates short circuit protection, under-voltage protection and integrated soft-start to ensure a reliable and safe operation in all conditions. The soft-start feature restricts the inrush current during start-up, allowing the system to slowly ramps up the output voltage gradually while avoiding excessive stress on the components.

The integrated N-channel MOSFETs in the MP4458DQT-LF-P offer unmatched efficiency with minimal switching losses. This regulator comes with a dedicated enable pin which can be used to shutdown the converter digitally, minimizing standby current consumption and prolonging battery life.

Floating synchronous rectification enhances system efficiency and allows the use of small ceramic capacitors at the output. Additionally, its low output ripple and low voltage stress on the input and output capacitors, ensures a clean power source for the system.
