MPSA18 Working Principle

In this state, the current in the collector-emitter circuit is then determined by the amount of current allowed to flow through the base. As the base current increases, the collector-emitter current also increases.

When the base-emitter junction is reversed biased, current is not allowed to flow. This is the ‘off’ state. The collector-emitter current is then nearly zero in this state. This feature makes BJTs useful in switch and protection circuits, as the current is easily turned off and on with the use of a small base current.
