Power factor correction is one of the most common ways of managing energy efficiency. The process has become increasingly more popular in recent years due to rising energy costs and environmental concerns. The NCP1653DR2 is a power factor correction controller integrated circuit (IC), designed to improve the power factor and reduce harmonic distortion in an AC system.
The NCP1653DR2 is a high performance primary side PFC controller designed for offline AC/DC applications such as LED lighting, LED signage, LED strip lighting, LED displays and lighting applications. It reduces cost and power loss by increasing the input power factor, thus a higher output power factor is achieved for better efficiencies. NCP1653DR2 is housed in a space saving SOIC-8 or 3mmx3mm QFN-8 package which allows for further cost savings and better thermal performance.
The NCP1653DR2 ensures a high power factor operation at all load conditions by working with a quasi-resonant current control topology using a valley interval slope control scheme. The device also incorporates a novel "asymmetric valley control" feature, which optimizes its power factor performance. This feature helps to ensure that a high power factor is maintained at very low and very high line voltages. With extreme line voltage variations, the NCP1653DR2 still has a high power factor operation.
The NCP1653DR2 is also capable of adjustable frequency peak current mode operation. This allows for smooth transition from boundary to peak current mode operation. During boundary mode operation, the device enters slope compensation mode, allowing for extremely low input current ripples and lower EMI levels. The peak mode current limit is adjustable to match the power converter requirements.
The NCP1653DR2 provides several integrated protection features such as valley overload protection, Saturation stop protection and over voltage protection. The device also is built-in a circuit which is able to detect load short-circuit conditions and quickly shut down the transformer primary current to protect the power supply from potential damage.
The NCP1653DR2 has been designed to be compliant with various international standards such as IEC61000-3-2, EN61000-3-2, EN61000-3-3 and other EN standards. It can control quasi resonant power supplies with a wide range of power levels, from 20W to 250W, thus providing a great deal of flexibility. In addition, it has a low stand-by power consumption and fast back on time to ensure energy savings.
The NCP1653DR2 can be used in a wide range of applications and is a great tool for optimizing cost and performance of power supplies. It has been designed to provide high power factor performance, fast transient response and superior load regulation in all load conditions, thus creating a highly reliable and efficient AC/DC power solution.
