When speaking of power factor correction (PFC), the NCP1653PG relies on its power-factor-correction circuit--more commonly known as an active front-end (AFE)--to improve power system efficiency and power factor. The NCP1653PG is designed for offline flyback power-supply applications and rectifier bridge systems of up to 1.5kW output; and provides significant efficiency and power-factor improvements in the presence of non-linear loads.The fundamental idea of the NCP1653PG is to rectify AC line voltage to DC, and then rectify and convert the ripple voltage from the transformer to a controllable profile that reduces the total harmonic distortion (THD). The NCP1653PG offers a complete PFC solution with a single IC. It can be used in both continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode scenarios, and features a peak current-mode PFC controller, which can optimize the PFC-speed response over line voltage and load conditions.In terms of the NCP1653PG\'s applications, it is suitable for the design of power adapters, non-isolated buck, flyback, and bridge rectifier circuits. It can operate in either continuous conduction or discontinuous conduction mode and has advanced current-mode control to optimize loop response under varying line inputs and fast transient loads. The NCP1653PG also features an adjustable supply voltage UVLO, an adjustable minimum current limit, and integrated feedback resistors for improved stability and transient response.The NCP1653PG’s Working PrincipleThe NCP1653PG extensively utilises the peak current-mode control for operating in continuous conduction mode or discontinuous conduction mode. In its integrated PFC controller, the NCP1653PG uses a peak current-mode control for optimal loop response and current-mode control with tight peak current-mode loop to provide faster response. It also monitors the peak current and adjusts the peak current to regulate the output voltage of the PFC.In the forward control loop, the main part is the Vcc regulator. The NCP1653PG tracks the primary current and the feedback capacitor value to generate a feed forward output voltage. This output voltage is used to regulate the current on the Vcc pin. This regulator operates in two stages, first it tracks the Vout error amplitude, and then it tracks the Vout ripple.For the current loop, the NCP1653PG uses a peak current monitor with a low current feedforward control and adjusts the peak current to regulate the output voltage of the PFC. At the same time, the peak current is monitored and the primary synchronous rectifier is switched on when the peak current signal is above the minimum current limit. Continuous conduction mode or discontinuous conduction mode are switched off when the peak current signal falls below the minimum current limit. The maximum current limit is also used to ensure a safe operation over current conditions. The NCP1653PG also features various protection features like an adjustable supply voltage UVLO and adjustable minimum current limit.In summary, the NCP1653PG power factor correction circuit is a peak current-mode based PFC controller, offering an integrated solution with a single IC.
