Introduction to LED Drivers

LED drivers are electrical circuits designed to regulate and control the flow of current within an LED system. LED drivers are used to control the electrical properties of LED lighting systems, such as brightness, power consumption, thermal management, and EMI compliance. The working principle of NCP3066DR2G is based on step-down DC/DC converter. It is a non-isolated buck converter, and the regular buck topology can regulate an output voltage by varying the duty cycle of the internal switch. The output voltage of the buck converter is given by the formula Vout = VIN (1–D), where D is the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) duty cycle controlled by the internal PWM comparator.

The internal Analog-To-Digital Converter (ADC) reads the feedback voltage from the output side and compares it to the reference voltage set by an internal bandgap voltage generator. The internal control loop corrects the duty cycle in order to maintain a regulated output voltage. An internal oscillator generates a triangular waveform with a frequency adjustable between 250kHz to 2MHz by two optically tied resistors.

NCP3066DR2G supports high peak current output (up to 30A) with very low input voltage drop (< 0.3V). Its switching frequency is adjustable from 250kHz to 2MHz which can provide fast response to changing load current. Its LM5084M device has current-mode control while delivering low quiescent current and typical power of 800mW. It also provides fast transient response times, excellent load and line regulation, reliable current limit and soft-start.
