PFC7325L Working Principle

The PFC7325L is a single-stage, buck-type PFC controller IC from NXP Semiconductors. It utilizes a unique peak-current-mode control architecture, and includes integrated Mosfets and gate drivers, as well as a variety of protection and diagnostic features. Its operation is summarized in five main steps as follows:

  1. The PFC7325L energizes the PFC converter and enters the startup mode. The current is limited by the internal current limit loop.
  2. When the output capacitor voltage reaches the start of current control (SOCC) threshold value of 18V, the IC switches to the pre-regulation phase.
  3. The PFC7325L implements its peak-current-mode control in the pre-regulation phase. The detected peak current is compared with the current reference. The error is then used to determine the switching of the Mosfets.
  4. In the current regulation phase, the PFC7325L seeks to maintain a constant current in the inductor. Once the peak current drop falls below the 50V threshold, the PFC7325L switches to the post-regulation phase.
  5. In the post-regulation phase, the PFC7325L switches off the Mosfets for variable amounts of time, aiding in power factor correction and ripple reduction.

The PFC7325L also includes several built-in protection features, such as thermal shutdown, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), overvoltage protection (OVP) and overload protection (OLP). These features serve to protect the system against any user error.
