Abstract: This paper is aimed to introduce the application field and working principle of PFS7523L, which belongs to PMIC – PFC (Power Factor Correction). PFS7523L is a high-performance PFC controller which is used in high power AC−DC converters. It uses current-mode control and optimized valley switching design to achieve high power factor, low distortion, good load transient performance and prevention of damage due to AC line surge.
Introduction: The Power Factor Correction (PFC) technology widely used in power electronics, electrical engineering and electrical power systems, has become an important element in efficient power management systems. It has been widely applied in the AC-DC power supplies to improve the quality of power. The PFS7523L is a high-performance PFC controller which enables single-stage PFC pre-regulation for AC−DC converters. It includes features such as current-mode control, optimized valley switching design and low-cost implementation to achieve high power factor, low distortion, good load transient performance and immunity to AC line surge.
Application Field: The PFS7523L is suitable for a wide range of applications such as home appliances, LED lighting, power tools, office equipment, communications equipment, medical appliances and industrial automation. It provides a high-performance cost-effective integrated solution for AC/DC non-isolated PFC rectifier pre-regulation with input current up to 5A.
Working Principle: The PFS7523L active PFC pre-regulation solution works in current-mode control and optimized valley switching mode. It uses an integrated control loop which actions the transformer. The built-in control loop guarantees a peak unity power factor for a range of input voltage and load current. The PFS7523L has an adjustable maximum duty cycle of up to 90%, which enables an ultra-high power factor over the whole operating range. Additionally, protection features like over-current, over-temperature, over-voltage, under-voltage and over-current are included. The Control and Protection Logic (CPL) circuit provides a power fail signal and other protection signals to the system.
This solution features a peak current-mode control, high bandwidth and dynamic response which allows ac current with lower distortion and output ripple. The optimized valley-switching mode prevents the loss of energy in the power switch. The valley switching design reduces the switching losses by up to 40% compared with conventional designs. The optimized valley switching also eliminates the crowbar circuit in the power converter design, making the design simpler, reduces the bill of materials and offers a cost effective solution.
The PFS7523L uses a low power and low-cost housing which has been designed for an easy and flexible implementation. The solution provides an optimized solution for efficient power management and better power utilization. It is an ideal choice for a wide range of applications.
