The PN4303 is a junction field effect transistor (JFET) that has been designed primarily for use in amplifier, analog switch and low noise preamplifier applications. It packs a lot of power for a small display, offering excellent frequency response, low input capacitance, and low power consumption.
In its simplest terms, a JFET is a four-terminal transistor composed of n-type semiconductor material with source, drain, and gate electrodes connected to it. It has the ability to accumulate and control voltage, similar to a normal P-N junction between two connections. However, its operation is quite different.
Because the gate voltage makes contact with the channel as opposed to the source and drain, it serves as a field causing a deformation in the charge carrier situation in the channel. This deformation is known as pinch-off, meaning the channels between source and drain become zero for positive voltages, preventing current flow. For negative input voltages, majority carriers are drawn into the channel, allowing current to pass. It is this transistor-like behavior that makes the JFET ideal for amplifying and switching applications.
The PN4303 offers a very low gate input capacitance, making it useful for low-level signal amplification and switching applications. Its very low noise figure and cutoff points of 150 mV or less make it well suited for preamplifier applications. It also has excellent frequency response, making it well suited for AC amplifier applications.
