A TRIAC (triode for alternating current) is a three-terminal electronic switching device that is mostly used to switch alternating current (AC). It is a 20th-century alternative to the two-terminal low-current devices such as relay contacts, incandescent light bulbs, and thyratrons that were used to control AC.
