PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) Resettable Fuses, often abbreviated as RGEF700K, are increasingly used in the protection of applications such as motors, household appliances, and computer equipment. Their functionality is based on a thermally activated self-resetting circuit protection unit, which senses and reacts to over current or over temperature conditions.
In normal operating conditions, the RGEF700K ensures a low-resistance path between the two terminals. When an overcurrent passes through the device, the temperature within the fuse increases. As it reaches a threshold level, the fuse trips. This limits the current and shuts the circuit off. On cooling, the fuse re-sensitises itself and the circuit is re-connected, resetting the device.
RGEF700K devices are available in many forms, such as a rectangular block with two metal terminals, an inline cylinder or a printed circuit board module. Typically the fuse consists of a thermally sensitive polymer with embedded silver electrodes and copper terminal connections. The device operates within a specified temperature and voltage range.
