PTC Resettable Fuses: RGEF400 Application Field and Working Principle
PTC resettable fuses, also known as polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) resettable fuses, are semiconductor devices used for current and overcurrent protection in various devices, from supporting the charge time and current protection of portable electronic systems to protecting audio-video equipment and home power supply components. The main properties of a RGEF400 (PPTC Resettable Fuse) are the fast response, high breaking capacity, reset lifespan, and high-temperature capability. This article will cover the application field and working principle of the RGEF400.
Application Field of RGEF400: PTC resettable fuses are suitable for any place where an overcurrent or short-circuit protection is needed. Since the RGEF400 has fast response and high breaking capacity, it is suitable for protecting portable electronics, such as laptop, smartphone, tablet, and digital products in power circuits, or protecting audio-video equipment, home power supply components, and automotive electronics. It can also be used for many other application scenarios, for example, protecting power circuits and components of communication products, home appliances, and smart home products, or protecting industrial automation products and railway vehicle electrical products. Furthermore, as the RGEF400 is able to withstand high temperatures of up to 125℃, it can easily meet the higher temperature requirements of automotive products and industrial electronics.
Working Principle of RGEF400: The typical construction of an RGEF400 PTC resettable fuse consists of a plastic substrate (such as polypropylene) filled with a higher temperature-resistant, electricity-conducting compound. The substrate contains an alloy heating element with a self-limiting temperature characteristic, which is the basis for the switching action of the device. When the current through the device exceeds a pre-determined threshold, the internal heating element of the device begins to heat up and melts the plastic substrate around the heating element. This increases the resistance of the device and limits the current accordingly. When the fault is cleared, the cooling of the device causes a contraction of the plastic. When the contraction is complete, the device contracts, reconnecting the circuit.
For resetting the RGEF400, the current needs to be above 0 and below the device’s trip current. The device will reset within seconds of the current being dropped, and it will remain in the safe state until the trips again. The resetting time depends on the ambient temperature, as well as the trip current and the rate of current drop.
The RGEF400 PTC resettable fuse has a variety of features, such as fast response time (under 3ms typical), high breaking capacity (up to 65A for various products) and reset lifespan (up to 30,000 cycles). Furthermore, its higher temperature capability (up to 125℃) makes it suitable for many applications, such as automotive products and industrial electronics. Therefore, the RGEF400 is perfectly suited for protecting portable electronics, audio-video equipment, home power supply components, communication products, and home appliances.
