A common mode choke, such as the RN214-0.5-02-39M, are components that contain one or more windings of wire coiled around a ferrite core. They are used to control noise or interference generated by the electronic circuits. Common mode chokes have become increasingly popular as an effective way to reduce EMI in various applications.
Common mode chokes are used in a wide variety of applications, including automotive, avionics, medical devices, consumer electronics, and industrial electronics. The RN214-0.5-02-39M comprises of two windings with different electrical connections on a single core. Part of the interference cancelles itself out due to the symmetrical wiring of the windings. The windings work in a series but are set in opposite directions, effectively cancelling out any induced voltages that are not traveling in the same direction. This is called differential mode operation.
The RN214-0.5-02-39M has a rated inductance of 0.5uH and a DC resistance of 0.02ohms. The inductance of 0.5uH has been chosen to maximize the susceptance of the choke at the target frequencies, allowing it to effectively reduce noise and interference in the frequencies of interest. The DC resistance is low so that only minimal power is consumed.
The RN214-0.5-02-39M also features a high characteristic impedance which allows it to provide effective filter action even at high frequency ranges. The attenuation of noise due to the high impedance is especially important in high-speed applications, where noise is more unpredictable. The high electrical quality and low DC resistance also mean that the choke is able to provide excellent signal transmission.
