Common Mode Chokes (CMCs) are components used in electronic circuits for the purpose of reducing noise, providing isolation, and preventing interference between two or more circuits. The RN214-3-02 CMC is a small, low profile inductor designed to reduce the level of low frequency common mode noise in high speed, small size, and low-profile applications. It is used in a variety of different areas such as automotive, consumer, and industrial applications.

The RN214-3-02 CMC is a 3-pin surface mount device with a compact (12 millimeters by 12 millimeters by 6 millimeters) size and low profile (1 mm height) that can easily be integrated into tight spaces in a variety of different circuit designs. The pins are laid out in a symmetric B-C-E configuration to withstand high thermal shock and vibration requirements while maintaining a good footprint/configuration ratio in the space available.

The RN214-3-02 CMC is designed to reduce low frequency common mode noise from 0-50kHz with minimum insertion losses. It features a bidirectional current capability with a specially designed E-shaped core with two dual windings. This allows the choke to effectively reduce differential mode noise while maintaining a low differential mode impedance. The core is designed to provide an inductance of 1.5 microhenrys (µH), with a DC resistance of 30 Milliohms (mOhms).

The RN214-3-02 CMC is used to provide electrical isolation between two or more circuits while allowing low frequency signals to pass through. This is accomplished by winding two coils over the E-shaped core, connecting one coil to each circuit while maintaining isolation between the two. The coils are wound on opposite winding directions, resulting in a strong magnetic flux which then generates an inductive current.

The inductive current created by the E-core then reduces the common mode noise. Because of its low profile design, the RN214-3-02 CMC can also be used in area where space is limited. It is designed to be able to operate at temperatures up to +85°C and withstand shock levels up to 70g. This makes it well suited for automotive, consumer, and industrial applications where shock and vibration resistance is required. The RN214-3-02 CMC is tested to withstand surge current up to 400 Amps.
