Common Mode Chokes are electronic components that contain a core of inductance windings (spiral or toroidal) and collocated capacitance windings, used to filter out electromagnetic disturbance (EMI) generated by other components. The RN214-1-02-15M is a Commom Mode choke designed to provide a cost-effective solution for a wide range of EMI/RFI applications.
Application Field: The RN214-1-02-15M is suitable for use in multiple fields, especially where high levels of EMI/RFI are present. Its low insertion loss, low detuning, wide frequency range and high common mode attenuation makes it an ideal solution for power electronic systems, like motor drives, high voltage DC/AC applications, switch-mode power supplies, EMC testing and noise reduction for measurement applications.
Working Principle: The RN214-1-02-15M employs the principle that high impedance can be used to block a signal path of AC power and noise from entering or exiting a circuit. It consists of two separate windings which create an electrical loop, capable of cutting off high-frequency EMC components and reduce interference with other devices. Common mode chokes act as a “filter”, helping to ensure that the EMI does not disrupt the operation of components in the system.
First, when current passes through the common mode choke, the magnetic field generated by the current induces the voltage called inductance voltage, which causes a part of the current to flow in the other direction. This flowing current in the opposite direction reduces interference and the amount of noise transmitted. Secondly, common mode chokes also serve as low impedance paths for the differential mode current. Again, the magnetic field of the winding induces voltage, which opposes the original flow of current, resulting in less noise.
Lastly, capacitance windings are added to the common mode chokes to even further reduce the transmitted noise. The capacitance acts like an electrical filter, blocking certain frequencies while allowing others to pass through. This helps to reduce the effect of unwanted electronic interference on the system as a whole.
