TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes provide protection for electronic systems against electrical transients due to electrical surges, electrostatic discharge (ESD), lightning, and other conditions. They have replaced traditional zener diodes in many protection applications. A SA11A R0G TVS device (Figure 1) is designed to protect data lines from high‐speed signals, and is typically used in automotive applications, consumer electronics, and computer and communication systems.

A transient voltage suppressor (TVS) is a type of diode that offers a robust, low‐cost solution for protecting sensitive electronic equipment from electrical transients. TVS diodes consist of a layer of p‐type or n‐type semiconductor material that is sandwiched between two layers of metal or metal oxide. When a transient voltage surge exceeds the rated clamping voltage of the device, the resulting current flow across the p‐n junction of the device creates a high resistance path for the surge current. This helps limit the surge voltage to the rated clamping voltage of the device, thus protecting sensitive electronic components from voltage stress.The ability of a TVS device to protect against an electrical transient depends upon its peak pulse power rating, which is a measure of how much energy can be absorbed by the device before it is destroyed. The peak pulse power rating is determined by the size of the p‐n junction area of the device, as well as its thermal properties. The current rating of the device also plays a role, as larger peak power rating requires higher rated currents.In addition to its ability to clamp transient voltages, a TVS device can also act as a bidirectional switch by controlling the flow of current in either direction. This makes them a very useful tool in applications such as cell phone signal protection, power converters, and surge protection circuits (Figure 2).

The SA11A R0G TVS device is designed to protect systems from high‐speed electrical transients and is well suited for automotive, consumer electronics, and data communication applications. The device is capable of withstanding repeated pulse waveforms of up to 2.2kW (10/1000μs) and can handle peak transient voltages up to 4.5kV. It has a very low clamping voltage (3.2V max) which allows the device to protect sensitive circuits even during low‐voltage conditions. The device has a typical on‐state resistance of 0.16Ω and a typical capacitance of 2.1pF, making it ideal for high‐bandwidth, low‐current applications.The SA11A R0G TVS device is simple to use and requires no external components for operation. The device can be easily inserted into a circuit and is available in a range of standard packages.
