These devices are cylindrical and are composed of an anode, a cathode, and a dielectric-encapsulated semiconductor junction. At the center of the device is a back-biased semiconductor junction. Between the semiconductor junction and the internal anode is a dielectric material which prevents the free flow of electricity. The semiconductor junction acts as a capacitor which stores energy from the surge and dissipates it as heat. When a surge occurs such as a lightning strike or line switching transients, the voltage builds up quickly, allowing the internal capacitor to draw energy from the surge and store it.
When the tripped voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the energy stored is then released to the anode in a controlled manner while at the same time, preventing any damaging current from entering the protected equipment. The device also has the ability to re-set itself after the surge is dissipated, allowing it to continue protecting the system from any further surges. What’s more, the device is shockproof and also has deep level traps, making it an ideal choice for systems that may be subject to shock and vibration.
