Power over Ethernet (PoE) Controllers are an essential component for powering digital communication devices, helping to streamline the way devices are powered. The SI3403-A-GM from Silicon Labs is a high performance, low power, single-port Power over Ethernet (PoE) Controller which has the capability to comply with the IEEE 802.3af and IEEE 802.3bt standards. When designing PoE systems, power dissipation is becoming increasingly important, and the SI3403-A-GM provides an ideal solution for engineers to address this issue. Silicon Labs\' power dissipation optimization technology provides a high-efficiency solution and a P-Channel Power FET, enabling the total power dissipation to be kept to the minimal level. This reduced temperature and heat dissipation improves system reliability, increases system lifetime, and reduces the cost of ownership.

In operation, the SI3403-A-GM works as a bridge between a standard DC voltage (36V to 57V) and a PD portfolio load compliant with IEEE 802.3af/3bt standard. When the DC voltage is applied to the input of the PoE Controller, the integrated detection and classification circuit recognizes the power source and determines the total required power. If it is higher than the compliant one, the controller will default to a lower level and the corresponding LEDs will be lit to indicate the level chosen.

The SI3403-A-GM is designed to have a minimized power ripple between the input and the output, which maximizes safety performance and minimize electromagnetic emission. The high level of power and signal isolation supported by SI3403-A-GM helps to reduce the risk of direct or indirect device connection and electromagnetic interference (EMI).
