Digital isolators are used to isolate electronic circuits from one another, and enhance immunity to noise and interference. They achieve this by transferring signals between devices via capacitive or opto-couplers, without the need for a direct electrical connection. The SI8442BB-C-IS1 Digital Isolator device is an efficient form of digital isolation, used to provide four isolated SCC paths and digital signal transmission.
Application field
The SI8442BB-C-IS1 Digital Isolator enables safe and robust data communication within industrial automation systems, such as motor drives, motion controllers, programmable logic controllers, and process controllers. It is also suitable for inverter, generator, and actuator control applications. Furthermore, it has been used in tanks and valves control systems for oil and water pump control.
It is also widely employed in automotive applications, for instance for CAN FD (CAN-Flexible Data rate) communication bus provision. Because the device is designed with a wide operating temperature range from -40°C to +125°C, it caters for the varied environmental demands of the automotive industry. It can also be used in many renewable energy and EV charging applications, since these systems have high EMI/EMC immunity requirements.
Working principle
SI8442BB-C-IS1 utilizes the digital isolator principle of capacitive coupling with a high-speed communication signal. It integrates four channels of capacitive Couple-Bilateral Switches (C-BSPs) to isolate functional sub-systems from each other, and the embedded 16-bit Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) helps to store user information. Each channel of the C-BSP includes three SSRGs, two Digital IO pairs and two Buffer blocks.
The digital isolator works by using two independent substrates to transfer data through capacitive isolation. An Isolated Input Driver (IDR) is used to drive data across substrate boundaries into a set of capacitive coupling elements, which transfer data from the primary Substrate (Substrate I) to the isolated side (Substrate 2). The data is then passed through an Isolated Output Receiver (ODR), from where it can be further transmitted into the system.
Different stages of the signal transmission process are controlled by a set of logic circuits, namely a Snap-Shot and SR-Enabled Channe Signal, an SR latch & Motion and a Toggle-On & Motion. The internal Transistors and Regulators provide the Isolation Barrier and the Capacitor Crossover Coupling elements.
The SI8442BB-C-IS1 digital isolator provides much greater safety, data security, and signal integrity than its predecessors. It is designed to protect a wide range of industrial systems from the potential harm caused by large voltage spikes, ESD events, and transient noises, thus is invaluable in preventing system malfunctions and breakdowns. On top of that, the device consumes only 10mW of power, making it one of the most energy-efficient digital isolation solutions in the market.
