A SK8403190L is a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) device, which features an extra low forward voltage of 630mV at −40V. This SCR has reliable and robust chip design that is suitable for power control in various applications. In the past, this type of device had been used in the switch-mode power supplies of the computers and in power control circuits. It can be used in wide temperature range environment, up to 175°C junction temperature.

The SCR is coined after the words silicon controlled rectifier. It is a type of semiconductor switching device and is similar to the field effect transistor. Generally, power is managed by utilizing a flexible switching device such as a transistor, diode, or SCR, as these devices are not only used for passing a low frequency signal, but can also be used for alternating current control. The silicon control rectifier is the combination of three devices, the diac (switch), a thyristor (trigger) and a rectifier (for controlling the current). The three devices together act as a switch, enabling electronic control of the high power current eventually.

The working principle of a SK8403190L is similar to the working principle of any SCR device. When a suitable forward bias is applied across the gate and cathode terminals, it enables the current to flow from anode to cathode and the device enters in to the “on” state. This is known as gate triggering of an SCR device. The anode-cathode current flows only when the gate-cathode voltage is higher than its break-over voltage and will turn the device off if the anode-cathode is reduced to zero. The turn off of the device can be done manually or by applying a gate current.

Generally, the application field for which SK8403190L is used includes radiator-cooled inverters, motor drives, battery chargers, adjustable-speed motor drives, television and other consumer electronics, battery powered electronics, antennas, solar cells, alternators, lighting, and more.
