It is built to handle higher voltages of up to 110V, making it suitable for applications such as portable power supplies, battery charging circuits and over-voltage protection circuits, typically used in automotive, industrial, military and aerospace equipment.The SM82SAHE3/2D works by acting as a short-circuit once the voltage across it exceeds its breakdown voltage. The device is designed with three terminals; an anode (A), a cathode (K) and a temperature sensing element (T). The device is non-conductive until the voltage across it reaches the breakdown threshold, at which point it will become very conductive, clamping down the voltage and preventing further surge or current flow.The SM82SAHE3/2D is designed with a temperature sensing element. This means if the current flow in the device exceeds its current rating, or the temperature of the device exceeds its specified temperature, it will enter its thermal response mode. In this mode, the device will reduce its breakdown voltage to a point where it can still provide effective protection but without risking any damage.
