Transient Voltage Suppresses (TVS) diodes are designed as the figure shows. It is composed of a diode a resistor and a zener diode connected in series. The zener barrier is limited to the reverse voltage of the diode and the resistor limits the current to the zener diode. The diode offers increased protection for over-voltage transients by diverting discharge current away from a critical circuit component, and the TVS diode is the name of the component. It is most often used to protect circuits from voltage spikes created by ESD (electrostatic discharge) or EMI (electromagnetic interference).
SM8S13A-E3/2D, discussed in this paper, is a unidirectional TVS diode exclusive for preventive surge protection of data lines. It protects downstream sensitive equipment (e.g., interface ports, cell phones) from high voltage transients, such as electrostatic discharge (ESD), Cable Discharge Events (CDE), lightning, and other surges. SM8S13A-E3/2D provides superior protection from upstream high voltage transients. The working principle of SM8S13A-E3/2D is a new structure that uses both a zener diode and a resistor to create a voltage dependent device. When the voltage reaches the breakdown voltage of the zener diode: it will cause the zener diode to break down. When the zener diode breakdown, the resistance of the resistor will limit the surge current, limiting its effects. This limiting current is generally known as the clamping voltage. This clamping voltage then dissipates the energy of the surge. SM8S13A-E3/2D diode is a small surface mount with power rating of 0.5W and stand-off voltage range from 20 to 60V.
The application fields of SM8S13A-E3/2D diode are mainly divided into three categories which are communication, consumer products, automotive electronics. In communication, it is suitable for protection of USB ports, RJ45 ports, HDMI ports and other data lines. It also used in consumer products like camera, printers and scanners. Besides, SM8S13A-E3/2D diode is also used in automotive electronics work on protection of Automobile interior network, and fuel injection system.
