The SP7650EB Evaluation Board is a DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply) kit from STMicroelectronics. It is a high-performance, easy-to-use tool for testing, benchmarking and prototyping SMPS applications. It is also designed for evaluating SMPS converters based on the STMicroelectronics STM650E family of products, such as the STM650E Efecta Micro PMIC. The board is also suitable for other SMPS applications as well.
The board comprises of a high-efficiency, high-power, highly-integrated transformer-based SMPS implementation. It is supplied with the STM650E Efecta Micro PMIC and a number of on-board components including:
- SPI & UART connectors
- Current & voltage sensing
- High Frequency Control (HFC) interface.
- High power MOSFETs, capacitor and inductor solutions, as well as several low-loss, low-inductance, low-resistance components.
- A Synchronous Rectifier (SR) enabled bridge rectifier integrated circuit.
- An over-current protection circuit.
The board demonstrates a high-efficiency, high-power, low-profile SMPS implementation in a single package. The integrated components, together with the circuitry designed around them, allow for a very compact and efficient power design. This eliminates the need for numerous external components or a large heat sink, thus reducing system cost and complexity.
As regards the working principle, the board is designed to operate as a fully-featured SMPS, similar to a full-scale SMPS system. It is linear, adjustable and extremely efficient. It contains a DC-DC power converter to step up or step down the input voltage for applications based on the STM650E Efecta Micro PMIC. It also has a ultra-low EMI (electromagnetic interference) circuit with a EFC (anti-electromagnetic interference) circuit. The board is designed to minimize the impact of thermal and electrical noise on the final output.
The board is also equipped with a full suite of monitoring and control features, including adjustable output voltage, current limiting, over-voltage and over-current protection, temperature monitoring, and external monitoring and control with an SPI or UART interface. These features make the SP7650EB an all-in-one solution for SMPS evaluation and designing.
