SP7651EB application field and working principle

The SP7651EB evaluation board is a DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS designed to operate from a wide range of input voltages and load conditions. This board contains the necessary elements for evaluation of the SP7651EB controller. This board is intended to operate in various modes of operation and can be used as an AC/DC converter, a PFM buck converter, a PFC boost converter, or a flyback converter.

Application Field

The SP7651EB evaluation board is an excellent choice for evaluation applications related to flyback and forward converters. With this board you can easily evaluate voltage and current regulation, transient response, EMC compliance in addition to providing adjustable switching frequency for user-friendly design. This evaluation board is well-suited for testing applications that require a wide variety of input voltages, load conditions, and operating modes.

The board is highly configurable, allowing different operating modes to be selected as per the experiment requirements. The on board components are suitable for conducting experiments in all operating modes from 1W to 40W over a wide range of line and load conditions, and may be suitable for higher power experiments if additional heat sinking is utilized.

The board is also equipped with over voltage protection, over temperature protection, and under voltage lockout. This protects the user from potential damage due to overvoltage, high temperature and power interruption. In addition, the board also provides isolated feedback and control circuits to reduce the risk of electrical noise and cross-talk due to operation at higher frequencies.

Working Principle

The SP7651EB evaluation board is based on an advanced power conversion architecture that operates from an input voltage range of 5V to 48V. The on-board PWM controller, SP7651EB, has a wide operating range of up to 6A, providing efficient power conversion with reduced current ripple and overvoltage protection. The controller features both standard and advanced protection features, including Voltage Mode Control, Multi-Phase Operation, Over Voltage Protection, Over Temperature Protection, Under Voltage Lockout, and Soft Start/ Shutdown.

The power stage of the board consists of a 650V MOSFET (FQP50N06L) whose drain-source voltage is regulated by the PWM controller. The MOSFET\'s gate is driven by a gate driver circuit that is provided to protect the MOSFET during switching surges. The output section of the board consists of a high quality Schottky rectifier diode (DSEI12-06A). The output filter includes a 10uH inductor, four 33nF capacitors, and four 33uF/25V capacitors.

In order to operate the board, the user must connect the bias voltage source to the JP17 jumper. Once the board is powered, the user can select the required operating mode via the DIP switch mounted on the control board. All other configuration parameters such as frequency selection and voltage settings must be carried out through PWM control panel.

The board can also be used to neutralize EMI Noise during power conversion by attaching the EMI filter and EMI shield onto the board. The user must also provide sufficient, appropriate external heatsinking and airflow to the board for safe operation. The operating temperature must not exceed the maximum temperature rating of the components used on the board.
