The SP7661EB evaluation board is specifically designed for off-line SMPS applications and is used to evaluate synchronous fixed-frequency constant-voltage (CV) or constant-current (CC) mode (bulk power supply) converters. The SP7661EB integrates a number of features which enable designers to evaluate the performance, simplicity, and effectiveness of the SMPS design. It consists of a +3.3V main power supply with a built-in power transformer that has a primary rating of 45V to 400V and a secondary rating of 12V to 25V DC. The main power supply and the secondary output are controlled by two independent and identical loop controllers, with a maximum output power of 100W.
The main features of the SP7661EB include an internal high-current output buffer (HCOB), a fast transient response, a low-power standby mode, and a scalable frequency range. The HCOB is used to provide a steady output voltage, as required in many critical applications, such as portable battery chargers. The fast transient response ensures that the output voltage is properly regulated even during brief changes in the input voltage. The low-power standby mode conserves energy when not needed. The scalable frequency range allows the designer to choose the operating frequency that best suits the application.
The working principle of the SP7661EB is based on the principles of pulse width modulation (PWM). The output voltage is regulated through a control loop which adjusts the duty cycle of the pulses applied to the power switch in order to maintain the desired output voltage. When the output voltage rises too high, the current in the sense resistor increases, and the output voltage is regulated by reducing the duty cycle of the pulses. Conversely, when the output voltage is too low, the duty cycle of the pulses is increased to bring it back up to the desired value.
