The STEVAL-ISA063V2 evaluation board is an off-line, DC/DC & AC/DC SMPS (switched-mode power supply). It is specifically designed for high-performance applications such as active-clamp flyback converter topologies. The board features a wide variety of control pins and components that are optimized for evaluation and benchmarking of power converter designs.
The STEVAL-ISA063V2 board implements the active clamp flyback, LLC (low-loss coupled) and quasi-resonant topologies. These three most commonly used topologies are chosen as they reduce component count while maintaining high efficiencies. Furthermore, the board’s control logic introduces higher switching frequencies as well as optimized operation with both low power and high power devices.
The evaluation board has a peak efficiency of 91%. This power efficiency makes it particularly suitable for lighting applications, where power consumption needs to be kept to a minimum while also preserving reliability. Furthermore, it has an active PFC topology with a high overall boosted voltage that provides a low-cost solution for high-reliability applications. Other advantageous features of this board include its 50 kHz operation frequency, its configurable current sense output channel, and its opto-coupled MOSFETs.
In terms of its application field, the STEVAL-ISA063V2 board is ideal for high-power density applications such as home appliances, automotive equipment and lighting. It can also be used in various industrial applications, such as server power supplies, data centers, as well as storage and plasma display units.
TheSTEVAL-ISA063V2 board is composed of two main components: the AC/DC SMPS controller IC and the boost converter design. The AC/DC SMPS controller IC provides the switching signals and is optimized with configurable options for the switching frequency, the loop compensation and the peak current mode control. It utilizes digital current-mode control technology for accurate and stable operation.
The other main component of the evaluation board is the boost converter. This is composed of the power switching MOSFETs, the transformer, the snubber circuit, the output rectifier, and the output filter capacitor. The MOSFET switches are driven directly from the MOSFET outputs of the AC/DC and boost SMPS controller IC.
The output rectifier converts the AC input sinusoidal voltage waveform into a pulsed DC output voltage. The output filter receives the output from the output rectifier and smooths it out to create a steady DC voltage. The snubber circuit redistributes energy across the switching devices and also provides protection against overvoltage and overcurrent conditions.
The STEVAL-ISA063V2 evaluation board is a robust and reliable tool for evaluation and benchmarking of power converter designs. Its switched-mode power supply topologies provide efficient and accurate power delivery ideal for high-powered applications. Furthermore, the board’s configurable current sense output channel and opto-coupled MOSFETs make it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications.
