The STEVAL-ISA179V1 is part of STMicroelectronics’ range of Evaluation Boards – DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-line) SMPSs. This robust and efficient design solution allows users to evaluate the basic operation and performance of an offline AC-DC flyback converter. This evaluation board provides internal power conversion and feedback control for offline flyback conversion with primary side regulation.
The STEVAL-ISA179V1 is typically used to evaluate the performance of STMicroelectronics’ integrated SMPS controller IC such as the ST1ST2 or STRI34/35/36. This board can also be used as a general-purpose design solution; it meets the Class-2 safety requirements and can be used in a variety of applications such as consumer products, communications, industrial control and more.
Design
The design of the STEVAL-ISA179V1 is based on a flyback topology with a primary side regulation (PSR) controller. This makes it suitable for offline DC-DC conversion applications such as LED lighting, adaptor or linear chargers and more. The main features of the converter include Zero voltage switching, average current mode control and digital PFC. The board offers high efficiency (up to 94%) and is capable of delivering up to 5W output power.
The board is composed of two main sections: the SMPS part and the Eval Board. The SMPS part consists of the transformer, power MOSFET, shunt, capacitor, inductor and Schottky diode. The Eval Board contains the power stage components, the ST1ST2 or STRI34/35/36 controller, programming filters and a PFC controller. All components are mounted on the Eval Board and are connected to each other with dedicated RJ45 connectors.

Operation
The STEVAL-ISA179V1 board operates in a Flyback converter topology. The main parts of the board include power semiconductor components, power stage components, a controller IC and programming filters. The power semiconductor components include a power MOSFET, a Schottky diode and a shunt. The power stage components include an inductor, a capacitor and a transformer. The board also contains current sensing and voltage sensing circuits that provide feedback to the controller IC.
The controller IC is responsible for regulating the output. It senses the input and output voltages, and then directs the power MOSFET accordingly. It also provides current limiting and over-voltage protection. The programming filters help set up the basic parameters of the converter. They can be used to adjust the switching frequency, the deadtime or the output power. Once the parameters are set, the controller will take over for optimal operation.
