The STEVAL-ISA190V1 is an evaluation board consisting of a self-supplied off-line switch-mode power supply (SMPS) based on a STMicroelectronics VIPer50E IC. It enables quick and easy evaluation of the VIPer50E device, allowing the user to provide the core reference and input voltage as well as different sensing resistors. The board microcontroller manages the power supply parameters.
The STEVAL-ISA190V1 AC/DC off-line SMPS is suitable for use in a wide variety of products and applications, including battery chargers, laptop and notebook computers, external power supplies, lighting, industrial control systems, and energy-efficient home appliances. It consists of an AC/DC rectifier bridge, EMI filter components, primary-side feedback components, auxiliary windings, an input voltage selector, an opto-coupler, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and a standby function.
The main components of the STEVAL-ISA190V1 evaluation board are a VIPer50E IC, a rectifier bridge, an EMI filter, a transformer, auxiliary windings, a LED source, assorted passive components, and a sensing resistor. The VIPer50E IC is an off-line SMPS controller, designed to be used in a wide range of AC/DC off-line SMPS applications. It integrates two PFC pre-regulators to ensure compliance with PFC regulations. It also features a built-in peak current mode control system, enabling implementation of an optimized high efficiency, non-dissipative cycle-by-cycle current limit.
The core component of the STEVAL-ISA190V1 evaluation board is the VIPer50E IC. This IC incorporates an ARM® Cortex-M0 processor core with different peripherals, a supervisory control unit, a self-fed isolated power supply, and several dedicated integrated circuits. The processor core provides advanced features such as digital control, protection, and measurement functions, while the ARM® CoreSight debug module allows for debugging and programming operations.
The feedback of the SMPS is done through a primary side feedback circuit consisting of the sensing resistor, the LED source, the maximum power point tracking opto-coupler, and the rectifier bridge. The LED source provides an input voltage signal to the opto-coupler, while the rectifier bridge provides the output voltage signal to the opto-coupler. The opto-coupler compares the input and output signals and drives the correction to the feedback output pin in order to maintain a steady state.
The STEVAL-ISA190V1 also features a high efficiency standby function, which prohibits the system from consuming more than 1W of energy in sleep mode. This is achieved by using a fractional-winding two-wire transformer in order to reduce the stand-by power to just 1.2∆@ 230Vac. There is also an enable/disable pin which allows manual control of the SMPS and a load disconnection output pin provides an auxiliary signal out of the STEVAL-ISA190V1 for external control.
