STEVAL-ISV021V1 application field and working principle

The STEVAL-ISV021V1 evaluation board is designed for driving three-phase AC inductive loads, like fans or small pumps, with full digital control based on advanced motion control. It can operate the motor at pre-defined speeds according to digital inputs or with analog control.

The STEVAL-ISV021V1 is supplied by an integrated three-phase DC/DC synchronous rectifier that provided voltage from a 400 Vdc bus. The boost PFC allows a sinusoidal current current for inputs up to 380 Vac, in order to minimize the average line current distortion, ensuring low total harmonic distortion. Two low-side integrated power MOSFETs switch the motor phases in a three-phase full-bridge configuration, driven by a dedicated IC.

Each MOSFET is integrated with a high-side bootstrap driver in order to increase the driving capability for the high-side device. All the motor protection functions, like over-current, over-temperature, stall detection and locked rotor protection are digitally implemented by the microcontroller.

STEVAL-ISV021V1 can support different types of motors: AC synchronous and asynchronous induction motors. It also features six digital inputs and three digital outputs, plus an embedded watchdog for safety operation.

The board is based on the STSPIN32F0A motor driver system in package, a highly integrated combination of three-phase driver and microcontroller optimized for low voltage DC motor control. The STSPIN32F0A system is based on 16-bit MCU, and incorporates 230 V three-phase gate drivers, power MOSFETs, advanced analog and power circuitry.

STEVAL-ISV021V1 provides a protected power rail of 5V for digital and analog signals conditioning circuitry. This onboard power supply has a fuse, positive and negative on-off switches and protection against overvoltage and short circuits. It can be supplied by either the on-board DC/DC or external voltage.

The working principle of STEVAL-ISV021V1 is simple yet effective. The integrated three-phase DC/DC synchronous rectifier provides a 400 Vdc bus, which is then stepped down to the required voltage level by the integrated PFC boost circuit. This is then fed to the STSPIN32F0A driver, where the embedded MCU converts the analog or digital input into the corresponding output signals for the power MOSFETs. The PWM switching frequency of the MOSFETs is controlled by the STSPIN32F0A, ensuring optimal operation.

Finally, the MOSFETs switch the motor phases in a three-phase full-bridge configuration, driving the motor at the required speed according to the digital inputs or analog control. All the motor protection functions, like over-current, over-temperature, stall detection and locked rotor protection are digitally implemented by the microcontroller.

STEVAL-ISV021V1 can thus be used in applications such as low voltage motor control applications such as fans, pumps, compressors, and other motor-driven devices. It can also be used in light industry and building automation applications.
