The STEVAL-SPDC01V1 is an evaluation board designed for offline flyback DC/DC and AC/DC switched-mode power supplies (SMPS). This single-stage SMPS topology board is mainly intended to evaluate the STMICROELECTRONICS VIPer22A flyback controller, but is also compatible with the VIPer22 and VIPer26A. With this board, users can quickly build a functional AC/DC or DC/DC flyback power supply for a variety of applications.
The STEVAL-SPDC01V1 evaluation board is suitable for the development of innovative Flyback converters, ranging from 10 W to 30 W for AC/DC and up to 35 W for DC/DC. For high power applications, the board is based on an optocoupler feedback scheme, This provides excellent line and load regulation as well as low EMI levels. This board is designed to provide the user with full access to all of the features of the VIPer22A/Viper22/Viper26A devices, such as use of an internal startup circuitry and operation at low power losses.
The STEVAL-SPDC01V1 evaluation board is intended for use in a wide variety of applications: offline AC/DC and DC/DC flyback power supplies, Class II and Class IV adapters, battery chargers, domestic appliances, lighting systems, pc peripherals, electronic equipment, etc. The board achieves very high efficiency, up to 93% in many cases, through the use of low power losses technologies, such as pulse frequency modulation and primary side regulation.
The STEVAL-SPDC01V1 evaluation board includes a buck-boost regulator to provide the power supply output. The voltage is set through an external potentiometer. The board also includes an enable pin that can be used to enable or disable the regulator. In addition, protection is offered against overvoltage, overcurrent and overtemperature to ensure reliable operation. The board is also compatible with the STMicroELECTRONICS STEVAL-SPUN01v1 supplemental board, allowing powerful measurements and analysis.
The working principle of the STEVAL-SPDC01V1 evaluation board is based on the STMicroELECTRONICS VIPerXXA family of devices. These are dedicated flyback controllers with an integrated 650 V power MOSFET that manage all the control and protection functions required for the construction of an efficient, low-cost SMPS. The devices use an internal startup circuitry that is triggered at a voltage drop of 5V at the ENABLE pin. The PWM signal generated by the device switches the integrated MOSFET, providing the necessary power to the primary winding of the transformer. The flyback controller then determines the optimal pulse width to meet the desired power consumption. On the secondary side, a synchronous rectifier ensures minimal losses, whilst the output voltage is regulated using an optocoupler feedback scheme.
