Power management integrated circuit (PMIC) is the heart of a device’s power system. It is the technology that allows modern portable devices such as cell phones, laptops and tablets to become so small and power efficient. The TOP242PN is an advanced offline switcher designed for use in multiple applications, including mobile phones, mobile internet devices, and other portable electronic products. It is a PWM current-mode controller which helps in optimizing power utilization with high efficiency, thereby reducing system cost.
AC-DC Conversion
The TOP242PN device integrates high-side and low-side power switches and drives the power switch synchronously. The AC power is transferred to the output DC voltage through rectification and filtering, rectified voltage is applied to the vin of TOP242PN and the output DC voltage is regulated by the PWM regulation function of the TOP242PN.
The TOP242PN has various built-in short-circuit protection functions. The output current comes with multiple levels of protection. Offline Switchers

Working Principle
The working principle of the TOP242PN is based on current-mode control. The output current is compared with the current limit by the current mode control circuit, and the voltage output of power switch is regulated through controlling the PWM duty cycle. There is an external resistor connected between FB pin and ground, which will produce a feedback signal to the error amplifier, and then the error amplifier adjusts the output voltage to a desired level by means of a PWM signal.
The TOP242PN has multiple built-in operational protection functions, including over voltage protection (OVP) to protect draining too much power, over temperature protection (OTP) to limit heat generated, under voltage lockout (UVLO) to prevent system from draining too much power, and current limit protection (CLP) to protect system from overloading. It is important to select the right parameters to balance system performance and safety considerations.
