TOP242YN is a member of a new generation of high-efficiency, low-power off-line switchers. TOP242YN provide a low component, cost-effective solutions for a wide range of off-line AC/DC applications like portable adapters, LED lighting and most standby or auxiliary power supplies. With the lowest Standby Quiescent Current with 0.45mA, TOP242YN also features 2A peak-current capability, low standby power and high stand-alone efficiency that is usually above 76%. With Reinforced Isolation, TOP242YN is approved to 500V, allowing for input/output voltages up to 400V. Additionally, its wide Operating Frequency range of 25kHz to 400kHz increases solution efficiency and allows very small form factor.
The Field Application
The TOP242YN is primarily targeted for AC/DC auxiliary off-line SMPS and power adapters applications, including notebook and desktop computer adapters, as well as standby power supplies for set-top box, modems, gaming consoles, portable radios, and many other similar applications.
TOP242YN are also suitable for wide range of dimmable LED lighting and traditional lighting off-line applications, including normal lighting based on candle-type bulbs, halogen bulbs, and fluorescent tubes, and include the necessary feature set for demand-side management, like dimming and energy savings.
Working Principle
The TOP242YN uses a high amplitude Resonant Voltage-Mode (RVM) to reduce EMI filter size while taking advantage of the high efficiency associated with the Resonant operation. As the first optimized RVM PWM (PRM) IC, the device operates without an optocoupler, allowing the use of a simplified power stage design. TOP242YN’s control input is driven directly by an LMT87-compliant circuit. The closed-loop feedback loop eliminates the startup time delay common with many low-cost PWM controllers. The device’s optimized turn-on/turn-off waveforms also allow for zero current switching at a wide temperature range, reducing EMI and increasing the system reliability.
Among the protection features that TOP242YN supports, the device is capable of setting the Maximum Voltage Protection (MVP) threshold on the Drain voltage of the power MOSFET or the secondary winding of the transformer. This allows the user to create a single-stage power architecture with advanced features, reducing the total number of components and cost of the power stage design. Additionally, TOP242YN offers over temperature protection (OTP), over current protection (OCP) for the power MOSFET, as well as overvoltage protection (OVP) for the main output.
