Working Principle:TOP254EN works by combining a flyback-type PWM switching network with a synchronous rectifier (SR) stage. The device also includes low-voltage startup and over-voltage/under-voltage/over current protection on the output, as well as latch-off capability.

The input is applied to the primary of an energy coupled transformer. Internal currents define the conduction time of the switch, which is compared to the oscillator reference to control the ON time of the internal switch. The secondary winding output voltage is rectified and compared to the available feed-forward voltage. If the output voltage drops below the internal reference, the device will operates in the burst mode.

The output current is controlled by the on-time of the switch. Internal energy is stored in the magnetic field during the switching state, and is then transferred to the output capacitor during the secondary conduction state. The programmable current limitation is one of the main features of TOP254EN. It can limit the maximum peak current in the SR stage, which effectively reduces the total system cost.
