Optical sensors are very common in everyday electronics, either as standalone devices or integrated into systems. They are used to detect the presence and absence of light, and ambient light in particular, in order to determine the relative ambient luminosity or illuminance. This is the primary purpose of the TSL262R-LF Ambient Light Sensor.

The TSL262R-LF is a surface mount, reflective, low power, low cost, ambient light sensor in a miniature 3-lead SOT23 package. It uses an array of photodiodes and filters that respond to specific wavelengths of visible and near visible light, to measure ambient light levels and then output a varying voltage. This voltage is directly proportional to the irradiance of the incident light, and can be easily measured and processed by microcontrollers for a wide range of applications.

The TSL262R-LF is capable of direct sunlight levels of up to 20,000 Lux, but has an adjustable sensitivity which can be adjusted to detect low light levels of a few Lux. This makes it an ideal ambient light sensor in smart lighting applications such as Dimmable LED lighting, as well as a range of other applications, such as occupancy detection and daylight harvesting.

The TSL262R-LF has a designed current usage of just 1.2µA at 3V and can operate at a voltage range of 1.8V to 3.3V, making it an excellent choice for battery powered applications. Operating temperature ranges from -40ºC to +85ºC, making it suitable for a wide range of environmental conditions.

The TSL262R-LF is designed to measure the light levels in the sensitive visible and near-visible spectral range, from 370nm to 950nm. The on-chip optical filter attenuates the other spectral regions such as infrared and ultraviolet. This can be particularly useful in outdoor applications to reduce the effect of direct sunlight on the sensor.

The TSL262R-LF has a very simple operating principle. As the incident light increases, the output voltage increases proportionally from its minimum value (dark). Conversely, if the incident light decreases, the output voltage decreases proportionally from its maximum value (bright). The output can be read directly with an analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) to convert the output voltage into a digital number.

The output voltage changes approximately linearly over the full sensing range and the response times can be adjusted by using an integrator on the output. This helps minimise any output noise or jitter when the sensor is subjected to changing light levels.

The TSL262R-LF can be used in a wide range of ambient light applications. It has been designed for use in industrial and consumer electronics (HVAC, outdoor applications, security, lighting control, automotive and consumer applications), medical devices (heart beats, light therapy, monitoring metabolic parameters) and relevant applications such as automatic control systems and sensor networks.

The TSL262R-LF is an excellent choice as an ambient light sensor in a wide range of applications. It provides low power operation with excellent sensitivity, and its adjustable sensitivity and filtering make it particularly well suited to use in outdoor applications.
