Working Principle

TZMB56-GS18 is a switching device composed of PN junction of an N-type and a P-type semiconductor. When a certain zener voltage is applied in forward bias, excessive current is discharged to construct a const potential barrier and then stabilize circuit. Under reverse bias, TZMB56-GS18 works as a reverse voltage protection device.

When zener voltage is applied in forward bias, the PN junction is formed and electrons move from N-type to P-type. Thus a high concentration of electron-holes is created near the PN junction. Interacting with energy band\'s difference before conduction, these heavy electrons and holes with surplus energy discharge out of PN junction and then recombine with each other to form neutral atom. Hereby, a const voltage is established near the PN junction so that circuit is stabilized.

In contrast, if the bias voltage is lower than the zener voltage, the device works as a reverse voltage protection device. In this case, the electrons and holes do not discharge and then recombine, which effectively prevents voltage from going too far in the opposite direction.
