Working Principle

UCC2894DR IC works on a continuous conduction mode (CCM) of operation. It produces a sinusoidal current waveform for the stator windings, providing a very smooth and quiet operation with certain advantages like greater torque, improved power factor, and longer battery life. It also offers multiple protection features like under-voltage lockout, over-current, stall, over-temperature, and short-circuit protection.

The major components of the UCC2894DR include a temperature sensor, a power sense resistor, an oscillator, a driver module, and a dual-output low- and high-side MOSFET. The temperature sensor, the power sense resistor, and the oscillator integrated in the IC, along with several external components, allow the IC to regulate an output voltage of up to 450V across a load. The oscillator sets the motor speed and generates the control frequency.

The power MOSFETs generate a sinusoidal current waveform, adding to the efficiency of the motor control. The driver module provides the required drive signal to the low- and high-side MOSFETs to control the output DC voltage. The UCC2894DR also has a standby mode, wherein the MOSFETs remain ON, maintaining the voltage at 5V, when the device is not used.
