Introduction

UCC38085D is an offline flyback converter, integrated with operating and protection functions from Texas Instruments. It is a high efficiency, low standby power offline power conversion device. It has a wide input voltage range (from 84VAC to 264VAC) and can deliver output power up to 15W.

Working Principle

UCC38085D works on the principle of flyback topology. It uses a FET as a main switch and an auxiliary re-drive stage to provide the needed current for system startup. The high-side power switch turns ON for a fixed duration, thus providing an HF vector for the output inductor. When the main switch turns OFF, the output inductor stores the energy which is delivered to the output. Meanwhile, the auxiliary winding of the output inductor energy is used to start or re-start the process. A rectifier diode is connected across the auxiliary winding for the purpose of rectifying the energy, thus enabling the system to boot.
