Power Factor Correction (PFC) is a technique used to ensure that the voltage and current applied to a load is in phase. In other words, the product of real power and reactive power is minimized or nullified. It is mainly used in industries which require high power, and in electric vehicles, to make the power supply more efficient, reduce current losses, and prolong battery life. The UCC3819AN is a PFC application field controller which supports both boost and buck topologies.
The UCC3819AN is a high-performance dual-mode controller designed for continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode power factor correction applications. It features a current-mode PWM control scheme for improved transient response and higher system efficiency, and implements comprehensive fault protection features for improved system reliability. In boost mode, it offers a high switching frequency to reduce component size and cost, and a selectable frequency for low EMI operation. In addition, it has an adjustable soft-start feature, which helps minimize current surges during startup.
The working principle of the UCC3819AN is primarily based on the control of power factor by regulating the switch on and off times of the power circuits. It is primarily composed of two components: an operational amplifier and a PFC enabled driver. The operational amplifier is used to measure the voltage drop across a power coil and generate the correct PWM signal for the PFC driver. The PFC enabled driver then converts the PWM signal into a digital control signal for the power switch. During the operation of the device, the operational amplifier compares the instantaneous read voltage from the power coil with a predetermined voltage reference and adjusts the switch-on and switch-off times accordingly.
The UCC3819AN can operate in either continuous conduction mode (CCM) or discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). In CCM mode, the inductor current never reaches zero, so the output current is almost sinusoidal with a very high power factor. In DCM, the inductor current reaches zero and can be used to optimize the power factor. The UCC3819AN uses a current mode control method to accurately adjust the switch on and off times and ensure the effective power factor correction, higher efficiency and reliability of the system.
