UCC3813DTR-2 is a high performance, low cost off-line switcher designed specifically for cost effective consumer and industrial power supplies. It is part of the Texas Instruments UCC3800 family of integrated PWM controllers, designed to provide total and cost-effective solutions for low-power AC/DC and DC/DC non-isolated applications. It is also suitable for many applications like lighting and motion control.

The UCC3813DTR-2 is a current-mode PWM controller which requires a minimum number of external parts and can start up from the no-load voltage to full load in the entire input voltage range. It is internally compensated and thus very stable when operating in current-mode and provides good resolution of loads. The device includes a precision trimming reference which provides high accuracy and reduces the external component count.

Due to its excellent current-mode control, compact size and high efficiency, the UCC3813DTR-2 is well suitable for wide input voltage range and high efficiency AC/DC applications. It can be used in SMPS applications like desktop PC power supplies, adapters, flat screen TV power supply and other consumer SMPS.

The UCC3813DTR-2 integrates many protection features to protect the converter in critical operating conditions, such as soft-start/over-temperature/over-voltage/under-voltage protection. The device also has an integrated oscillator, which needs no external components.

The UCC3813DTR-2 working principle is based on the current-mode control theory, which is a type of DC-to-DC conversion technique. In the current-mode control technique, the PWM signal is based on the feedback current of the output. The working principle involves setting a reference current which is then constantly compared with the feedback current to produce the PWM signal or the gate signal for the MOSFET switch.

The main advantage of the current-mode control technique is the ability to control and stabilise the converter against a wide range of load and input conditions. This control technique ensures excellent dynamic response, a wide range of frequency, power efficiency and reliability. It has first-class transient response characteristics and prevents false current-mode oscillations.

The UCC3813DTR-2 also consists of a soft-start circuit, which prevents inrush currents during start-up and thus protects the system\'s power components; this also helps to reduce peak output voltages and minimising the stress on components.

As part of the UCC3800 family of integrated PWM controllers, the UCC3813DTR-2 is designed to provide cost-effective solutions for a wide variety of power management applications. By combining high switching frequencies with high efficiency, the UCC3813DTR-2 is ideal for applications such as lighting and motion control, adapter and power supply, and consumer and industrial SMPS.
