Working Principle

The ULN2003AIPWRG4 follows a simple linear logic, where logic high ( > 2V ) at the input is directly converted to a high current sinking mode ( > 500 mA) at the output. This high current is greater than the sourcing capability of the microcontroller itself, and thus the ULN2003AIPWRG4 can provide high level current to drive devices like motors and LEDs.At the driver input, 7 darlington transistors are arranged to provide a linear voltage to current amplifying topology. This effectively reduces the input threshold from around 0.7 V (at which a typical logic NPN transistor starts conducting) to 0.4 V, making it easier for the logic to drive the driver. The output side of the ULN2003AIPWRG4 also provides open collector outputs which can be tied together to create a more powerful drive.

For more complex power management tasks, the PWM feature of the ULN2003AIPWRG4 can be used to simultaneously control the average output current and the switching frequency. The error flag pin of the ULN2003AIPWRG4 also gives an indication of whether the device is in an overcurrent or thermal overload condition.
