They are also known as uni junction transistors, and the TRAP triac acronym stands for “TRIode for AC switching”. A TRIAC is an electronic component that has three terminals, used to control the flow of electricity. The third terminal can be used to control the directions of current, switching the device on and off. The applications of TRIACs range from home lighting to telecoms equipment. In fact, TRIACs are used in almost any electronic application. For instance, TRIACs are used in the automotive, appliance and industrial sectors. TRIACs are mostly used in AC circuits. In such situations, they can be used as a switch, or as a variable resistor to control power or speed. For example, in a motor controller, TRIACs can be used to control the speed of the motor. They can also be used to limit the current in a circuit. In a heating circuit, TRIACs can be used to limit the maximum power that can be supplied to the heating element.The working principle of TRIACs is based on the positive temperature coefficient of the P-type devices. When a TRIAC is connected in a circuit, the required voltage is applied across the devices’ main terminals. This triggers a current flow- mainly to the main gates of the devices, depending on the applied voltage across their gates. In response, the devices increase the resistance of the device, which establishes a voltage across their gates. This voltage is equal to the applied voltage, which in turn causes the device to switch off. This is the basic working principle of TRIACs. A TRIAC is usually used in a circuit together with a diode and a snubber network. The diode is used to protect the TRIAC from damage due to currents running in the opposite direction, and the snubber network is used to optimize the efficiency of the TRIAC.
