Thyristors - TRIACs
The Z0109MAG is a four-terminal, bidirectional, gate-controlled, silicon thyristor. It is part of a family of four-layer, planar thyristors, known as TRIACs, where TRIAC stands for “triode for alternating current”. These thyristors can be turned on and off with little current and voltage and can control both positive and negative bi-directional current flow. The main application areas of the Z0109MAG are the appliance, commercial, and industrial industries. The Z0109MAG is frequently used in motor controls, line voltage controls, light dimming, and speed control. Additionally, because it is rugged and reliable, the Z0109MA is extensively used in high-voltage and large-current applications. The Z0109MAG can handle voltages up to 600v and currents up to 8A.Working Principle
The Z0109MAG is a four-layer, planar thyristor, often referred to as a TRIAC. A TRIAC is simply a combination of two thyristors connected in series with the gate connected to the common terminal, as shown in Figure 1. The TRIAC has three main electrodes; the main terminal (MT1) and the main terminal (MT2) which control the anode and the control gate (G1) which is located between the main terminals that is used to control the current flow. The Z0109MAG thyristor is triggered by applying a pulse to the control gate (G1) and the anode current starts to flow. The thyristor remains in its conductive state, until the voltage between MT2 and MT1 reaches the latching voltage which turns off the thyristor. When the voltage is reduced below the current load, the thyristor again conducts and remains in the conducting state until the voltage reaches the blocking voltage, which again turns off the thyristor.Structure
The Z0109MAG is composed of four layers of silicon, two of which comprise the anode and two of which comprise the cathode. The anode layers are doped with P-type impurities while the cathode is doped with N-type impurities, resulting in a PNPN structure. The MT1 and MT2 are connected to the anode layers while the G1 and G2 are connected to the cathode layers. The layers are further connected by an L-shaped channel, also known as the body channel.Conclusion
