Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are electrolytic capacitors that store electrical energy ionically in an organic solvent. These capacitors consist of two performing metal electrodes insulated by a dielectric film, surrounded by an aluminum foil and coiled up into a cylindrical shape. The two performing metal electrodes are also called anode (positive electrode) and cathode (negative electrode). The anode is coated with an electrically conducting oxide film. This oxide film works as the dielectric in the capacitor and can store electrical energy when a voltage is applied.

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in various industries due to their high energy density in terms of ratings. They provide a broad range of operating voltages, from low voltages, like 3 VDC to high voltages, like 450 VDC to 650 VDC. The capacitors are also characterized by their low leakage current and long life.

In terms of ratings, the capacitors are available in a variety of values, beginning from the smallest 470PF to the largest 470µF. They have a wide range of capacitances that can range from a few microfarads up to several thousand microfarads (µF being the symbol for microfarad).

The range of temperature range in which aluminum electrolytic capacitors can operate is between -40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius. Apart from this, they have a very high self-healing capability, which means that even when an initial short circuit occurs, the capacitor can recover and remain safe even after removal of the short circuit.

In terms of physical dimensions, aluminum electrolytic capacitors arrive in many forms such as radial, axial, snap-in through hole, SMD and miniaturized types. Some of the common types of vented types are 160PX100MEFC12.5X25. Capacitors with these dimensions can absorb up to 25A of current in small size at any given time.

With increasing demand in various applications, the aluminum electrolytic capacitors come in two distinct operational principles, namely the polarized aluminum electrolytic capacitor and the non-polarized aluminum electrolytic capacitor. As the name suggests, a polarized capacitor requires the correct implicit polarities for its operation, failure of which may damage the capacitance. On the other hand, non-polarized aluminum electrolytic capacitors are free from any registration of polarities and can tolerate reverse connections.

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors have found application in a number of areas, such as, in the power management module of switch-mode power supplies, motor-run and motor start in micro-wave ovens, snubber circuits in energy meters, in switch debouncing, circuit breaker, in resonant circuits, lightning protectors for telecom networks, energy storage and many more. They offer significant features such as high efficacy, wide temperature range, high frequency stability, low cost as compared to tantalum capacitors, high capacitance respect to volume and space, etc.

Overall, aluminum electrolytic capacitors provide high reliability in a limited capacitance range when compared to other type of capacitors such as ceramic, film or paper capacitors. Its characteristics of low cost, higher capacitance ratio which provides maximum storage of electrical energy in a space efficient manner makes them suitable for a wide range of electronic applications.
