Working Principle

The anode of 1N5820US is connected to the negative input of the AC source, and the cathode to the positive input. When the AC voltage is applied, it alternately forward and reverse biases on the diode junction. This causes a half-wave rectification, and in such a way, the input AC is converted to DC.

Since the anode of 1N5820US is connected to the negative input of the AC source, it will be reversely biased when the positive peak value of the AC waveform is applied. In this situation, the diode will not pass any current and the junction behaves like an open switch. When the AC voltage begins to fall, the diode will be forward biased, allowing the flow of current through it and thus providing a path for the current flow.

In order for the 1N5820US to be forward biased, the anode voltage must be higher than the cathode voltage. As soon as the reverse voltage is applied, the current flow through the diode will cease and its junction will behave like an open switch. This process is continuously repeated throughout the entire AC cycle, which results in the half-wave rectification of the AC voltage.
