Thyristors - SCRs

An SCR or 2N2329AU4 is part of the thyristor family. It is a four layer semiconductor device with three terminals, the anode, gate, and cathode. It can control larger voltages or currents than a Transistor, making it ideal for use as an electrical switch or a regulated power controller. The 2N2329AU4 has a reverse blocking capability of up to 400 volts allowing it to prevent reverse current flow.

Application Field:

The SCR is applicable to various AC voltage and current control circuits. A popular use is as a large capacity AC switch. The SCR can be used to regulate current in AC circuits. This can be done by either turning the device ON or OFF or changing the amount of time that the SCR is ON or OFF. Additionally, the SCR can be used in applications such as AC Motor Control, Voltage Regulation and Power Rectification.

Working Principle:

The SCR works by applying a voltage to the gate of the device. Once the threshold voltage is applied, the thyristor begins to conduct and current can flow from the Anode to Cathode. Once conducting, additional gate voltage has no effect on the device and the SCR stays "on" until the current drops or the voltage across the device lessens. This process is called latching.The operating characteristics of the SCRs can be adjusted by changing the size of the current, the pulse width of the gate signal, or the frequency of the gate signal.

Precautions:

When using an SCR, be sure to follow proper safety guidelines. Make sure to isolated power supplies and circuits form each other as reverse polarity or high-voltage surges could affect an SCR. Additionally, SCRs are sensitive to high temperatures and should be protected against overheating. Make sure all incoming supplies are within voltage specs, and check the polarity when installing. Lastly, be sure to use the appropriate gate signal.
