The 2N3903 is classified under transistors - bipolar (BJT)-single. Working principle of the 2N3903:
The 2N3903 consists of two junctions: a base-emitter and base-collector. When a base current IB is injected from the base, a hole-electron pair (h-e) is generated in the base then most of the hole flow to the emitter zone. Meanwhile, some small signal current (IE) is created which corresponds to the injected base current. The emitter-collector portion then acts as if a voltage-controlled current source, meaning the collector current (IC) is given by the relationship IC = β*IE, where β is the current gain.
In order to achieve optimal performance, the device needs to be biased correctly. When biased correctly, the device exhibits excellent gain and power performance, resulting in simpler and less-expensive designs with better signal fidelity and lower noise.
