Thyristors, also known as SCRs, are semi-conductor devices with three or more terminals used for electrical switching and power control. The 2N691 Thyristor is a three-terminal device with an integrated gate and is used to control or switch large currents or voltages in stationary industrial equipment.

The 2N691 provides a variety of application fields, particularly in power electronics. It can be used for power conversion, motor control, phase control, rectifying, switching and static switching relays. The device then operates as a normally-on switch until the current passing through it falls below a given threshold value. In bidirectional thyristor switching, the thyristor is initially opened using a control voltage at the gate terminal, and then closed by applying a reverse voltage across its main terminals. The device is opened or closed by controlling the difference between the forward and reverse voltages.

The 2N691 Thyristor is a low-cost, three-terminal, low power device that offers high current and voltage switching capability in a small package. It is a fast switching device with turn-on time of 0.3 μs and turn-off time of 0.5 μs, enabling it to be used in a wide range of applications. The maximum working voltage of the device is 800V and the maximum current is 5A. It has an excellent thermal stability and its gate drive voltage is between 5V and 15V.
