Direct digital synthesis (DDS), also known as fractional-N synthesis, is a technique that generates high-frequency waveforms from a single, low-frequency reference clock. DDS is widely used in a variety of applications such as radar, electronic warfare, research, communications, and various instrumentation systems. The AD9850BRSZ is a frequency synthesizer capable of producing a variety of waveforms in response to direct digital codes.The AD9850BRSZ is a low-cost, 10-bit resolution, low-power DDS with a maximum output frequency of 160MHz. It incorporates a 14-bit Phase Detector, 28-bit Programmable Waveform Generator, an on-chip low-pass sinc filter, a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and a reference clock oscillator. This powerful combination of components enables generation of extremely accurate frequencies and waveforms, even with low-cost clocks. The AD9850BRSZ is designed to operate over a supply voltage range of 2.5V to 3.3V.The AD9850BRSZ is well-suited for a variety of applications such as: radio frequency synthesis, instrumentation, modems, medical imaging, wireless data systems, ultrasonic testing, and medical imaging. In radio frequency synthesis applications, the AD9850BRSZ can generate complex waveforms to create frequency hopping and modulating signals. In medical imaging, the synthesizer can generate high-frequency tones for diagnostic procedures. In instrumentation applications, the DDS can be used as a low-cost source of sine waves for signal conditioning and filtering applications.The AD9850BRSZ features a 10-bit resolution direct digital synthesis (DDS) architecture. The frequency of the output signal is determined by a 14-bit phase accumulator which is driven at a rate determined by a 28-bit programmable waveform generator. The AD9850BRSZ also features an on-chip sinc-type low-pass filter which allows frequency output to be limited to desired levels.The AD9850BRSZ also has a built-in voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and an on-chip phase detection logic. The VCO can be used to generate a wide range of frequencies with a very small voltage change. The phase detection logic determines the phase of the output signal, which is used to resolve spurs in the spectrum of the output frequency.The AD9850BRSZ is a low-cost, 10-bit resolution, low-power DDS which offers a wide range of frequency synthesis applications. It allows for the generation of complex waveforms and a wide range of frequencies with a low-cost reference clock. The on-chip low-pass sinc filter simplifies the generation of clean spectrums and eliminates undesired sidebands. The voltage-controlled oscillator and phase detection logic provide fine control of the output signal and enable the elimination of spurs. The AD9850BRSZ is an ideal solution for many frequency synthesis applications.
