The AN77L12 is a voltage regulator IC from a series of low-dropout linear regulators that feature wide input voltage ranges from 8V to 18V, as well as an average quiescent current of only 0.45mA that increases to 0.60 mA when under full output load. This makes this IC ideal for a variety of cost sensitive consumer and mobile applications, including cellular and cordless products, as well as wireless data and consumer communications devices. In addition, its low dropout voltage spec and its output voltage precision over line and temperature ensure designs meet strict accuracy and current performance requirements.

AN77L12 is ideal for a variety of consumer and mobile applications such as cellular, cordless products, as well as wireless data and consumer communication devices. Working Principle of AN77L12

The AN77L12 linear regulator converts an input voltage within 8V to 18V range to a constant output voltage. It holds a power transistor switch, which is opened and closed by a comparator circuit. The comparator compares the output voltage to a reference voltage, and maintains this relationship by controlling the power switch. This switch is connected to one terminal of the input voltage, and the other terminal is connected to the output voltage. When the power switch is open, the output voltage equals the input voltage, and when it is closed, the output voltage is clamped to a preset level, providing a regulated output voltage.

When the power switch is open, the output voltage would fluctuate due to variations in input voltage and other conditions. Hence the comparator monitors the output voltage and closes the power switch when the output voltage exceeds a certain level based on the reference voltage. This provides the required regulation limit at the output. The power transistor switch is connected to a feedback loop inside the IC, and the IC monitors the output voltage continuously and adjusts the power switch to keep the output voltage within the reference voltage.

The advantage of the AN77L12 IC is its low power consumption which allows the voltage regulator to run cooler, compared to other linear regulator ICs with higher quiescent currents.
