BQ24703PWRG4 is a highly integrated, monolithic, single-package Charge Management Device (CMD) for space limited lithium-ion and Li-polymer battery charging. It includes a second order, constant frequency, current-mode control buck, boost, and dual buck-boost operations with an integrated power FET. This CMD is an ideal solution for compact, multi-chemistry battery charger applications that require high efficiency, low standby current, and charge current up to 3A from a standard 5V USB port, a chassis-earth wall adapter, or any other DC source. BQ24703PWRG4 supports all the features and protections that today’s portable applications require.
BQ24703PWRG4 Application Fields
BQ24703PWRG4 is an ideal solution for a wide variety of application fields including portable medical devices, mobile phones, digital cameras, handheld gaming systems, and tablet PCs. It is optimized to provide an extremely low input quiescent current operation with excellent power saving efficiency, making it ideal for large battery and high electronic speed applications. The embedded protections such as input overvoltage, thermal shutdown, and charge fault protections, further enhance the device’s reliability and make it suitable for rapid, high-efficiency charging of large capacity batteries. BQ24703PWRG4 also allows for configurable low battery output voltage, enabling a low cellular stand-by current for cell phones or other battery driven applications.
BQ24703PWRG4 Working Principle
BQ24703PWRG4 consists of two power MOSFETs, one for the boost stage and another for the buck stage. The MOSFETs are connected in series in the boost stage, and paralleled in the buck stage. The boost MOSFET serves to increase the voltage across the battery while the buck MOSFET serves to reduce the voltage across the battery. The BQ24703PWRG4 also has two separate buck controllers. The Boost Controller is used to regulate the battery voltage while the Buck Controller is used to regulate the charging/discharging current. The Buck/Boost Functionality Block includes adjustable Target Voltage (VOUT1), Minimum Voltage (VFB1) and Output Current (IOUT1). The Boost Functionality Block includes adjustable Target Voltage (VOUT), Maximum Voltage (VFB) and Output Current (IOUT).
BQ24703PWRG4 utilizes a proprietary topology that can dynamically adjust the boost/buck ratio in order to maintain an optimal supply voltage for the battery. In addition, BQ24703PWRG4 provides a wide range of D+/D- resistor programming up to 3A. The maximum output current of the device is 3A. The device also has a built-in thermal protection feature that limits the output current and reduces the heating, thereby improving the safety of the system.
The integrated power FETs and extensive set of protection features make BQ24703PWRG4 suitable for a variety of applications including rapid-charging, high current, and battery stack charging. The integrated power FETs also reduce cost and PCB area. Additionally, the built-in protection features ensure safety and prevent overcharge and over-discharge conditions.
